There are 4 types of waterbaby: Which one are you?

Being in water connects us with nature, ourselves and our communities – and we all have a slightly different way of doing it.

Across the vibrant global community of female surfers, windsurfers, wakeboarders, windsurfers, paddleboarders, kayakers, swimmers, kitesurfers and divers out there, we’ve noticed that everyone has their own way to getting in water. We’ve identified four distinct categories of waterbaby that reflect different levels of interest, schedules, priorities and passion. So let’s dive into these categories, which celebrate the diverse ways that we all embrace the exhilarating world of water!

    1. The Addicted WaterBaby

When we mention addicted water babies, we’re not only referring to those fearless individuals who chase monstrous waves across the globe. These people seize every available opportunity to be in water and are willing to make sacrifices for their passion. They carefully choose their jobs, homes, vacations, and friendships based on how these aspects can facilitate their surfing lifestyle. Flexible work hours and a beach-side location are ideal for maximising watery opportunities. Building relationships with fellow surfers or supportive partners who understand and embrace their saltwater addiction is crucial for the addicted waterbaby.

      2. The Balancing Waterbaby

The balancing waterbaby is fueled by an insatiable hunger for waves, but various commitments prevent them from fully satisfying their craving. While they may not be as fully committed as the addicted waterbabies, they find a way to prioritise being in the water or share their free time with other aspects of life. Balancing responsibilities and the desire to be in (or on) water can be a challenge, but they manage it anyway. These water babies understand the art of compromise, finding moments to sneak in a quick splash while fulfilling other commitments. Whether it’s navigating parenting duties, work responsibilities, or other activities, the balancing waterbaby maintains a deep connection with the ocean whenever possible.

        3. The Seasonal Waterbaby

For the seasonal waterbaby, surfing holds a special place in their heart, but it remains lower on their list of priorities. They might surf primarily during the summertime, and even then, it’s limited to the weekends. The seasonal waterbaby typically owns a single piece of equipment and a wetsuit, which they have cherished for years. While they may live in a land-locked city, their love for the sport transcends geographical limitations. The seasonal waterbaby might choose financial stability over the constant pursuit of the perfect wave, but when they do hit the water, their love for it shines through.

          4. The New Waterbaby

The new waterbaby is either fresh to the sport or has only experienced it a few times, yet they eagerly claim the title of a addicted water baby. Perhaps they own a board or kite that has yet to meet the water, serving more as a decorative piece than a tool for sport. Others might have invested in all the gear but lack the experience and knowledge to fully embrace the lifestyle. Their journey is just beginning, fueled by the desire to immerse themselves in the exhilaration and freedom that the water offers. The new waterbaby seeks to learn and grow, excitedly sharing their aspirations with anyone who will listen.

In the world of watersports, there is no single definition of what it means to be a waterwoman. Women who embrace the sport can be found across the spectrum, from the addicted and balancing water babies who navigate the intricacies of other commitments, to the seasonal water babies who find solace in the water during their precious free time, and the wishing water babies who eagerly embark on their journey of self-discovery.
